Passed Arnheim on the 17th. A strong fortified town—the air and appearance of the people alter—breakfasted at Doesburgh—a neat town situated on the Issel which we passed on a bridge of boats—this is a frontier town of the provinces and they are now forming a new Dyke from the old to the new it will command the navigation of both rivers—we now take leave of the Republic, much delighted with the Luxuriance of its pictures, the general appearance of a competence

Si puedo juzgar de la decencia de la gente por una circunstancia, esta no será muy favorable: una mujer, a las dos de la tarde, puso en tierra su cesto y orinó en medio de la calle, delante de la ventana donde yo estaba. Aquí se levantan grandes cobertizos para secar el tabaco; hicimos alto para tomar un refrigerio en la miserable aldea de Lundré, y como se hacía tarde antes que llegásemos a Arnhem, nos alojamos en una taberna delante de la puerta de la ciudad.
17 de agosto.
Pasamos por Arnhem el día 17; una ciudad fuertemente fortificada; el aire y el aspecto de la gente cambian. Desayunamos en Doesburg, ciudad bien ordenada, situada sobre el Ijssel, el cual atravesamos por un puente de botes. Esta es una ciudad fronteriza de las Provincias y están ahora haciendo un nuevo dique desde el antiguo hasta el nuevo que condicionará la navegación de ambos ríos.
