clouds and stars — eight large lights and one small taper to the left — the reponses in the service are chanted by four young men dressed in robesthree kneel in front of the altar behind the priest, the centre one with a small steel hammer and a brass not unlike the bell of a clock, kept it sounding by regular gentle strokes — the other kneeling on the right of the priest, held a silvervase suspended by four long silver chains with eight bells which he kept constantly ringing before the altar—the priest was richly dressed in a red robe with a white groundhigh standing collar and rich cap with a golden cross which at particular parts of the service was taken off and put on again with great reverance by the attendant— after the service was over we went to the principal Roman catholic church—it is very elegant — crowded with images and costly furniture—the congregation very large and devout—it has three galleries and an organ—after service the sexton or aidducamp of the priest shewed us with great solemnity — ancient monuments

Los oficios litúrgicos los cantan cuatro hombres jóvenes vestidos con túnicas; tres se arrodillan delante del altar detrás del sacerdote. El del centro, con un martillo de acero y un trozo de latón no muy diferente de la campana de un reloj, lo hacía sonar con suaves golpes regulares. El que estaba arrodillado a la derecha del sacerdote, tenía un jarrón de plata colgado por cuatro largas cadenas de plata con ocho campanitas que hacía sonar constantemente ante el altar. El sacerdote vestía una suntuosa dalmática roja, con alzacuello blanco y mitra realzada con una cruz de oro, que en determinados momentos del oficio era quitada y vuelta a poner con gran reverencia por el ayudante. Una vez terminada la ceremonia, fuimos a la principal iglesia católica romana: es muy elegante, llena de imágenes y costoso mobiliario; la asistencia muy numerosa y devota; tiene tres naves y un órgano.
