Dear Sir
it is with great pleasure I recieved your Letter of the 16th. Of march last, which convey'd me the first & only news I ever liad from you since I quitted the Havana — I never did write to you, or mention your name to any Person who was not your very intim friends here who Enquired after you but I defy any (even amongst these or any description whatsoever) to say I mention'd you as assisting me; or having the least concern in the Execution of my Political Plans, embarquetion in the havana &c… nothing, but a puerile, mean, ignorant, simple, or designing carácter can have formed suche a suspition.
It can not be a report, because I should have heard it, or my friends, which number you may depend is not very small, in the country… Besides I have allways acted with the greatest caution but with respect to you and myself For which reason if I pretended to stop a Report that never existed, it would produce, the very contrary efect to what you wish for… I tha you for the advise you give me of the sentence passed upon my Person. Estimado Señor:
He recibido con gran placer su carta del 16 de marzo pasado, en la que me comunica las primeras y únicas noticias que tengo de V., desde que dejé La Habana. Nunca he escrito a V. ni mencionado su nombre a persona alguna que no fuese de sus muy íntimos amigos de aquí, que preguntaron por V., pero desafío a cualquiera (aun entre éstos o cualquier relato que sea) que diga que yo le haya mencionado a V. como habiéndome ayudado, o habiendo tenido el menor interés en la ejecución de mis proyectos políticos, embarque en La Habana, etc… Nada, sino un sujeto pueril, ruin, ignorante, ingenuo o intrigante ha podido formar tal suposición.
No puede ser un rumor, porque lo hubiésemos oído yo o mis amigos, cuyo número puede estar seguro, no es pequeño en la región… Además, siempre he actuado con la mayor prudencia respecto a V. y a mí mismo, por cuyo motivo, si hubiera pretendido detener un rumor que nunca existió, hubiese producido un efecto totalmente contrario al que V. desea… Le agradezco la noticia que me da sobre la sentencia recaída sobre mi persona, por el juez de residencia, sicofante del ministro Gálvez, que es naturalmente la
